A Q3 tally put crypto security losses at $1.28 billion across 268 incidents, with adjusted losses at $877.8 million, showing how totals shift when frozen or returned funds are accounted for.

The tally, updated Oct. 19, showed total losses 56.2% above Q2’s $820.4 million. The incident count rose 20.7% from 222. Its adjusted-loss figure increased 10.9% from $791.7 million in Q2.

Separate Q3 estimates also differed. A separate Q3 estimate put losses at $1.18 billion across 107 incidents. Another estimate topped $1.17 billion across about 125 incidents. These totals come from different datasets and should not be combined.

The gap appears in first-half figures as well. From Jan. 1 through June 30, one tally counted $1.3157 billion across 344 incidents, including $115.3 million in frozen or returned funds and $1.2004 billion in adjusted losses. Another counted $972 million across 207 incidents, while a third put losses at about $956 million across 182 incidents.

First-half attack patterns also varied by type. One tally recorded 125 smart contract exploits among 207 incidents. Infrastructure and operational compromises made up about 15% of incidents but represented about 76% of the value stolen.

Total losses reflect the initial value affected, while adjusted figures account for funds frozen or returned. The measures are not interchangeable, and period-to-period comparisons depend on using the same dataset and loss definition. The different first-half totals and incident counts show why a single year-to-date figure cannot be treated as a harmonized measure across trackers.
