Virtuals Protocol announced private payments for AI agents, adding a privacy focus to its commerce platform as companies build tools for software agents to perform paid work and settle transactions on-chain.

Virtuals’ existing Agent Commerce Protocol already lets agents take paid jobs and settle payments on-chain. The new announcement concerns private payments within that existing workflow.

Other companies are developing tools for different steps in agent commerce. Stripe and Tempo introduced the Machine Payments Protocol, an open standard for agents and services to coordinate payments. Visa is building a protocol to check an agent’s identity and authorization through cryptographic signatures. Payment coordination, authorization and settlement are distinct parts of a transaction handled by software.

The wider push toward automated payments also includes tools that could let agents purchase individual articles or other information as they work. Existing payment protocols do not establish shared rules for licensing that content or compensating publishers.
