The ENS DAO has opened a vote on activating ENSv2 on Ethereum mainnet, starting a process that would temporarily halt new .eth registrations if the proposal passes and is executed. Voting is scheduled to close Sunday, Oct. 25.

Approval would not switch ENSv2 on immediately. Execution would first stop new registrations through ENSv1. ENS Labs would then synchronize existing names before opening registrations and migration on ENSv2, leaving a gap when neither system accepts new registrations.

Owners could continue using and renewing existing .eth names without migrating. The proposal sets no deadline for moving them to ENSv2, continuing the earlier ENSv2 activation proposal.

ENSv2 would replace ENSv1’s flat registry with a hierarchical structure in which each name can have its own registry for subnames. It would also provide more flexible permissions for managing names and subnames.

After ENSv2 goes live, ENS Labs plans to transfer its remaining administrative authority over the system to the DAO. The registration changes, migration and handover depend on approval and execution of the proposal.
