MediaTek-Linked Google TPU v9 Project Could Ship in First Quarter 2028
Design revisions are estimated to have delayed MediaTek’s work by about three weeks. An initial tape-out is projected for Jan. 2027.

Design changes to Google’s tensor processing unit (TPU) v9 are estimated to have delayed the MediaTek-involved project by about three weeks, with shipments for that project potentially moving to the first quarter of 2028.
The estimated revisions involve Core A, code-named Humufish. MediaTek’s Core B and input/output designs would need to align with Core A, affecting the projected timetable for its work on the chip.
An initial tape-out is projected for Jan. 2027, followed by a tape-out for the production version in the second quarter of 2027. The shipment window remains an estimate.
TPU v9 is expected to use Intel’s EMIB-T packaging technology. Substrate yields could affect production scale and cost.
The schedule matters as Google expands its TPU business beyond cloud-based access to the chips. Google Cloud recognized revenue from TPU system sales in the quarter ended June 30.
MediaTek has scheduled an investor call for Oct. 30 at 3 a.m. ET (07:00 UTC).
