Mastercard Opens AI Agent Payment Pilot to Developers With Nine-Payment Demo
The Oct. 20 demonstration used one approved budget for nine payments involving two providers. Early access gives developers APIs, documentation, a toolkit and a sandbox.

Mastercard opened developer access to its Agent Pay for Machines pilot on Oct. 20, pairing a nine-payment demonstration with tools that let businesses test AI purchases under approved spending limits.
At Cloudflare Connect, marketing agency Hype assigned an AI agent to plan a protein bar campaign. Within one approved budget, it made nine payments involving two providers: it bought social media research from AIsa and paid for eight campaign images through Cloudflare AI Gateway.
Under the x402 protocol, a paid digital service can return an HTTP 402 payment request. The agent then signs a voucher within its approved limit. Before releasing the service, the provider checks the voucher; vouchers can be redeemed together later.
Coinbase Developer Platform supplied infrastructure to fund the agent. BVNK served as its wallet and handled payment and settlement through Mastercard Global Money Platform, while Base provided the onchain settlement network. Mastercard’s platform supports fiat and stablecoin payments.
Mastercard introduced Agent Pay for Machines in June. The pilot follows its work on controls for automated payments. Mastercard completed its BVNK acquisition in August and launched Global Money Platform with BVNK on Oct. 15.
Early access includes APIs for buyers and sellers, documentation, a toolkit and a sandbox. Agent Pay for Machines remains a pilot and is not commercially available.
