ChatGPT PIN Reset Permanently Deletes Locked Chats and Protected Content

Forgetting a PIN alone leaves chats intact. Users who know their current PIN can change it without losing conversations.

ChatGPT users who reset a forgotten PIN permanently lose every locked conversation and content protected only by that PIN, even though removal from OpenAI’s systems may take longer.

The consequence is part of the locked-chats feature introduced Oct. 20. Users can protect selected conversations with a four-digit PIN and find them under Projects > Locked chats. Locked conversations leave regular history and pinned chats, though their removal from search results may take time.

Forgetting the PIN alone does not delete anything. Users who remember their current PIN can change it without losing locked chats. On supported devices, Face ID, Touch ID or device unlock can open a conversation, but changing the PIN still requires the current PIN.

Resetting a forgotten PIN is a separate process. Users must confirm a deletion warning and verify their identity if prompted. Completing the reset removes every locked chat from the account, along with memories stored only within locked chats and files or other content protected only by the old PIN. A file added to a locked chat from elsewhere keeps the access rules it already had.

OpenAI Support cannot restore the deleted content. Workspace administrators cannot reset a user’s PIN or unlock the chats on that user’s behalf.

Deleted chats disappear from the account view immediately. Under OpenAI’s standard policy, their removal from its systems is scheduled within 30 days. Exceptions apply to chats already de-identified and separated from the account and to records retained for security or legal obligations. Workspace retention rules may also affect the timeline. None of those retention provisions gives a user a way to recover chats after a reset.

The PIN controls access within ChatGPT without adding end-to-end encryption or changing retention and model-improvement settings. Locked conversations in Enterprise and Edu workspaces can still appear in compliance message logs. A conversation already open on another device may also remain visible there.

Locked chats are rolling out gradually across Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts. ChatGPT for Healthcare is excluded. Temporary Chats serve a different purpose: They ordinarily stay out of history, while locked chats remain saved until deleted or removed by a PIN reset.
