Zcash NU7 Upgrade Targets 25-Second Blocks, Down From 75 Seconds

NU7 would also close Sprout, Zcash’s original private transaction system, requiring holders to move any remaining funds before activation to keep them spendable.

Zcash (ZEC) plans to cut the interval between blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds in its NU7 upgrade, reducing the time users wait for payments to register.

Under the proposed NU7 settings, three confirmations would take about 75 seconds on average, compared with nearly four minutes at the current target interval. The change is already active on Zcash’s test network, while the mainnet rollout remains pending.

NU7 would close Sprout, Zcash’s original system for private transactions. Anyone with funds remaining in Sprout must move them before activation to keep them spendable.

The upgrade would also temporarily remove 60% of the transaction fees collected in each block from circulation. The funds are expected to begin returning to miners around February 2031.

The mainnet rollout is awaiting final integration into node software.
