Winklevoss Twins Link Zcash Privacy to AI-Driven Blockchain Analysis
They argued that stronger analysis of public ledgers could make financial privacy more valuable, while Zcash’s transaction shielding remains optional.

Winklevoss Capital co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss linked Zcash (ZEC) privacy to artificial intelligence’s growing ability to analyze public blockchain records, arguing that the shift could make financial privacy more valuable. Their remarks came in an interview that aired Oct. 20.
The brothers’ case centers on the contrast between Bitcoin (BTC), whose transactions are publicly recorded, and Zcash, which offers an option to shield transaction details. The interview framed Zcash as a long-term privacy bet rather than a short-term trade.
Cameron Winklevoss’s valuation scenario put ZEC’s market capitalization at about $25 billion, or roughly 2% of Bitcoin’s. He argued that a 10% share would imply fivefold upside and a price above $5,000 per ZEC. The estimate did not specify when that market snapshot was taken.
For Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. ET (Oct. 20 at 12 a.m. UTC) through Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. ET (Oct. 21 at 12 a.m. UTC), ZEC’s market cap was $19.57 billion and Bitcoin’s was $1.646 trillion, a ratio of about 1.19%. Because that period does not align with Winklevoss’s undated estimate, the figures are not a same-time comparison.
Zcash’s privacy is optional. Shielded transactions encrypt addresses, amounts and memo fields, while transparent addresses expose holdings and transaction histories. Users’ privacy therefore depends on choosing the shielded option.
The interview also presented Zcash as a potential hedge against quantum computing. The Ironwood NU6.3 upgrade activated July 28, 2026, at block height 3,428,143, but that milestone does not establish that Zcash’s current cryptography can withstand quantum attacks. ZIP 2005, a proposal for quantum recoverability, remains proposed; the change alone would not secure the network against quantum adversaries. Existing shielded protocols rely on discrete-logarithm hardness.
The twins also have an investment connection to ZEC. Winklevoss Capital led a $58,888,888 private placement for Cypherpunk Technologies in October 2025. Cypherpunk held 323,394.38 ZEC as of Aug. 11, 2026, about 1.92% of Zcash’s circulating supply, as part of its ZEC accumulation.
