XMTP Labs Plans to End Its Shared Messaging Network in Early 2027
The transition would move messaging to open-source software users can host themselves, without requiring a token or crypto wallet.

XMTP Labs plans to wind down the centrally operated version of its messaging network in the opening months of 2027, shifting the protocol toward software users can host independently.
The planned open-source system is designed to support encrypted conversations between people and AI agents. It will not require a crypto token or wallet.
XMTP co-founder Shane Mac said efforts to grow Web3 social and messaging through partners did not create sustainable demand. He said the project has never issued a token and has no plans to do so, because the team has not found a model that connects a token’s value to actual usage.
XMTP raised $20 million in a 2021 Series A led by a16z Crypto. It completed a $20 million Series B in 2025 at a $300 million equity valuation.
The company’s target for the network transition is early 2027.
