Ethereum Proposal Aims to Cut Finality Wait to About Four Minutes
The design would handle new-block selection and earlier-block finalization through distinct voting duties. The proposal remains preliminary, with no activation date.

Ethereum researchers are developing a consensus proposal that aims to bring transaction finality to about four minutes from roughly 16, a roughly fourfold cut in the network’s settlement wait.
Ben Edgington, coordinator of the fast-finality research effort, filed the draft Wednesday alongside other researchers. Under the plan, validators would cast separate votes to determine new blocks and finalize blocks already in the chain.
The separation is meant to help finality advance at a quicker pace. The draft is at an early stage, with no activation date chosen.
