In an Oct. 21 interview, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai said he expects Gemini 5.0 to be much better than Gemini 4 Argon, without giving a release date or performance benchmarks.

Pichai based the forecast on research advances and Google’s internal model evaluations. He did not disclose benchmark results or a computing budget dedicated to Gemini 5.0.

Separately, Pichai described the signals behind Google’s broader computing plans. They include research progress, internal assessments of model capabilities, consumer and enterprise demand, and long-term contracts with committed revenue. He did not disclose the value or duration of those contracts.

Google plans computing capacity two to three years ahead, Pichai said. The capacity it uses today reflects decisions made in 2024, while planning for land and power can extend into 2028 and 2029.

Pichai has also described trade-offs in allocating computing resources. Prioritizing frontier AI research can mean giving up near-term Google Cloud revenue.

Google introduced Gemini 4 Argon to trusted cyber defenders on Sept. 30. On Oct. 13, it expanded access to developers and enterprises worldwide through its API and to eligible subscribers through Google products.

Alphabet’s capital expenditures totaled $44.9 billion in the quarter ended June 30, primarily for technical infrastructure. Operating cash flow was $39.1 billion, and free cash flow was negative $5.855 billion.

Google Cloud revenue reached $24.8 billion, up 82% year over year, with enterprise AI infrastructure and solutions contributing to growth. The financial figures cover Alphabet broadly and do not identify spending or capacity dedicated to Gemini 5.0.
