Marc Andreessen, a16z’s co-founder, said open-source AI can help keep control of the technology from concentrating in one or two companies or the government, arguing that it lets children understand how AI works.

a16z shared Andreessen’s comments on X on Oct. 23. He said he would find it difficult as a parent if children could learn AI only by working at one or two companies. In an open-source environment, children can understand how the technology works, he said.

Andreessen warned that without open-source AI, control could concentrate in one or two companies or pass to the government. He invoked government sushi as an analogy while asking people to consider government-controlled AI, and described open-source development as a safeguard against that outcome.
