Electrum released version 4.8.3 of its Bitcoin wallet to fix a serious security issue and urged all users to upgrade, with technical details of the vulnerability planned for later Saturday.

The release notice does not describe how the flaw works, identify affected versions or say whether it has been exploited. Electrum plans to publish the vulnerability details later Saturday but did not give a specific time for that disclosure.

Electrum also flagged a possible Windows Defender warning for ZXing.dll, a file associated with the update. The project described the warning as a false positive. The notice separates the software fix from the Windows alert: Electrum said the release resolves the security problem and characterized Defender’s warning as a false positive. Its upgrade request covered all users, without naming a narrower group or operating system.

Electrum is a lightweight wallet for Bitcoin (BTC), and version 4.8.3 is the release the project identified as containing the fix. The planned disclosure is the next step stated in the announcement.
