OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned that artificial intelligence models may uncover vulnerabilities faster than organizations can fix them, putting pressure on cybersecurity teams that rely on patching.

During a Stanford Graduate School of Business discussion, Altman said models could find bugs beyond conventional hacker threat models, including at the hardware level.

“I no longer think we’re going to be able to just patch all the bugs,” Altman said. He said defenders may need to use AI to build a new kind of security defense. Altman called cybersecurity risks a “huge safety and security issue.”

AI has both defensive and offensive uses. It can help identify vulnerabilities, while the same capabilities could help attackers develop offensive tools and exploits.
