OpenAI and Anthropic Offer Up to £200 Million in UK Biosecurity Lab Credits
The UK government is committing £100 million to establish the laboratory, which will use AI to detect and monitor biological threats.

OpenAI and Anthropic will provide up to £200 million in AI model-use credits for a UK biosecurity laboratory, adding private-sector support to a government-backed effort to detect biological threats.
The UK's £100 million commitment to establish an AI biosecurity lab will fund a facility designed to use artificial intelligence to detect and monitor threats. Google DeepMind and life sciences company Basecamp Research will also work with the lab.
The government separately allocated £65 million to develop responses to pathogens. The broader package includes £120 million for the AI Security Institute and £23 million for the AI Economics Institute.
The measures form part of a wider government effort to improve its ability to assess and address risks related to artificial intelligence.
