Amboss co-founder Jesse Shrader demonstrated transfers of USDT and USDC through Bitcoin (BTC)’s Lightning Network, with users exchanging Bitcoin for stablecoin value as the tokens moved across payment channels. The demonstration points to a stablecoin use for payment infrastructure built on Bitcoin.

Lightning channels let participants move payments without waiting for every transfer to be recorded in a new block on Bitcoin’s main chain. Taproot Assets provides a way to issue and transfer digital assets, including stablecoins, on Bitcoin. Under the protocol’s design, assets can travel over Lightning and ultimately settle on Bitcoin’s layer-one blockchain.

Amboss has integrated Taproot Assets features into Rails, RailsX and its Payments API. The API is built for businesses that need to send and settle BTC, USDT and USDC through a shared interface. That design can spare businesses from maintaining separate payment connections for each asset.

RailsX also enables atomic swaps between Bitcoin and Lightning-based stablecoins, which Amboss labels USDT-L and USDC-L. An atomic swap either completes as a whole or fails as a whole, so neither participant can keep the other side’s assets without completing the trade. The format is designed to remove the need for an escrow agent.

Amboss introduced RailsX at the PlanB Forum in El Salvador in January 2026, then opened it to early users by late April. The product combines peer-to-peer swaps with self-custodial liquidity and payment routing across assets, giving users tools to manage transfers without an intermediary holding funds. The demo adds a stablecoin example to the broader discussion of Lightning’s payment activity and Bitcoin usability.

Liquidity may be a bottleneck for multi-asset Lightning payments. A payment can route only when channel balances are available on the right parts of its path, while adding assets makes that balancing more complex. Amboss’s routing tools are designed to address that challenge.
