Bithumb is investigating whether customer records were exposed after an unauthorized outsider accessed its employee mobile work system, which the South Korean exchange says is separated by network from its trading system.

The company said employee information was exposed, but it has not identified the number of affected workers or the types of records involved. It detected the unauthorized access on Oct. 27 in South Korea (KST) and notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission that day.

Bithumb described the compromised platform as an employee groupware tool for work and information sharing. The company said the system was network-separated from its virtual-asset trading system, so customer assets could not be accessed through that system; it has not announced a completed review of customer records.

South Korea’s presidential office announced plans for an Oct. 28 meeting with Financial Services Commission officials to review cyber incidents involving Bithumb and Mirae Asset Global Investments.
