China May Lead Eight Industries by 2030; U.S. May Retain a Slight Edge in Frontier Model Development

The forecast names large language models, humanoid robots and energy storage among the eight; China may become competitive in chip sectors, though full self-sufficiency remains difficult.

China is projected to lead globally in eight of 17 key industries by 2030, while the United States may retain a slight edge in frontier model development.

The eight fields include large language models (LLMs), optical communications transceiver modules, humanoid robots, commercial vessels, autonomous and connected vehicles, energy storage, green hydrogen, and biopharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs).

China is better positioned in software optimization and lower-cost AI deployment, while the United States may hold a narrow advantage in frontier model development. Neither country is expected to gain a comprehensive advantage.

China remains behind in chip design, foundry services, memory and equipment materials. It may become globally competitive in those areas by 2030, but full self-sufficiency is expected to remain difficult.

Intense price competition among Chinese AI companies could delay profitability until pricing becomes more measured. Trade barriers and export restrictions may change where Chinese industries expand without stopping that expansion.
