Stack Overflow Questions Fall Below 1,000 a Month as Commenters Cite AI’s Role

Commenters said the decline began before ChatGPT’s public launch in November 2022 and that AI tools accelerated it.

Stack Overflow’s monthly count of new questions has fallen below 1,000, while commenters say AI tools accelerated a decline that began before ChatGPT’s public launch in November 2022.

Commenters also pointed to strict moderation, a high bar for posting and a community they viewed as unfriendly to questioners. Some said the site’s existing answers already cover many common programming problems. Others cited cross-site statistics they said showed a sharper drop after ChatGPT launched.

The question-count decline connects to broader concerns about pressure on websites as AI alternatives spread. TokenPost previously covered Stack Overflow as an example of that trend in its report on pressure facing websites that rely on online traffic.
