Binance Changed Its First X Statement Twice in 13 Minutes
Its final edit said user funds were “completely safe”; Binance put the incident’s total impact at about $6.3 billion in an Oct. 30 update.

Binance revised its first X statement about the Oct. 29 security incident twice in 13 minutes, moving from saying it had not confirmed an impact on user funds to declaring them “completely safe.”
The post appeared at 5:16 p.m. ET (9:16 p.m. UTC). Binance’s original version said, “At this stage, we have not confirmed any impact to user funds.” An edit at 5:24 p.m. ET removed that sentence. In a second edit at 5:29 p.m. ET, Binance wrote, “User funds are completely safe.”
A minute before the first post, Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao wrote, “User funds are safe! It does look like a hack on Binance.”
Binance’s preliminary Oct. 30 update described a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop as a possible path to a service container used to submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The exchange said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys were compromised.
Binance estimated the incident’s total impact at about $6.3 billion and said about $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen on-chain as of its Oct. 30 update. The estimate of the incident’s $6.3 billion impact is distinct from the frozen-assets figure; the two amounts do not establish how much remains unrecovered.
Binance pledged to cover all losses through its SAFU fund and company funds. It said it would publish a technical postmortem after completing its investigation.
