Elliptic, a cryptoasset security and intelligence firm, says $6.43 billion in cryptoassets was stolen from Binance. The firm believes North Korea-linked actors were involved, an allegation that puts exchange security at the center of the claim.

Elliptic also said $2.84 billion, or 44% of the stolen assets, had been frozen. That figure describes the portion Elliptic says is frozen; $6.43 billion is its total claimed theft. The two amounts therefore describe separate measures of the same incident, not two losses.

Elliptic made the claim Oct. 29. Its $6.43 billion figure would make the alleged theft one of the largest in crypto history. The firm framed the North Korea link as a belief, while the freeze figure describes the reported status of part of the stolen assets. Together, the claimed total, the frozen share and the suspected North Korea link put a major security allegation involving Binance in focus for crypto markets.
