Conversational AI shopping sessions require substantially more resources to serve than keyword searches. That makes infrastructure efficiency central to whether platforms can run these services profitably.

Platforms may also need to earn revenue at multiple stages of a shopping journey. Potential sources include advertising, transaction fees, subscriptions, payments and infrastructure use.

AI can guide shoppers from product discovery and recommendations through a transaction, payment and fulfillment. Platforms with several ways to earn along that path, or a strong role in the transaction, may have more durable prospects.

Alphabet’s AI Mode currently monetizes below traditional Search. Meta has not demonstrated agentic revenue beyond advertising. How quickly those gaps narrow and additional revenue streams emerge remains uncertain.
