OpenAI will combine ChatGPT and Codex usage allowances for Plus, Pro and Business subscribers in December, putting activity in both products against a shared token-based limit.

OpenAI links the change to its effort to bring ChatGPT Work’s agent features into the main ChatGPT experience. Codex, the company’s coding tool for engineering work, is available through ChatGPT, code editors and the terminal.

Usage will be measured in tokens, with consumption varying by model and task. Advanced models and complex tasks generally use more. “Instant chat will not draw from your usage,” OpenAI said.

Subscribers will be able to see combined remaining usage and reset times under Settings → Usage. After reaching a limit, they can wait for a reset, upgrade or buy credits for eligible features. OpenAI expects most users will not need to wait for resets more often than they do now.

The company has not provided a specific launch day or published allowance amounts by plan. OpenAI previously notified subscribers at checkout of the planned change without giving a start date or plan allowances.
