NVIDIA Displays OOI Optical Interconnect Design for Hyperscale AI Clusters
The design puts optical engines on a larger silicon interposer that carries the GPU. Prototype samples are available, but no commercialization timeline has been set.

NVIDIA displayed its Optics-on-Interposer (OOI) design at SEMICON West 2026, presenting a research-stage interconnect approach for hyperscale AI clusters. The company has prototype samples of the design.
An NVIDIA Research Institute chief research scientist described OOI as replacing the organic package substrate with a larger silicon interposer. The interposer carries the GPU, with optical engines integrated directly onto it.
By placing the optical engines on the interposer, the design moves optical-to-electrical conversion closer to the chip core. OOI remains in research, and NVIDIA has not set a commercialization timeline.
