Devcon 8 Schedules Ether Issuance Debate as Glamsterdam Notice Sets No Mainnet Date

The Nov. 4 roundtable will examine EIP-8363, a draft that would burn more validator rewards as the share of ETH staked rises.

Devcon 8 will host a Nov. 4 discussion of a proposal to change Ether (ETH) issuance. The Oct. 22 notice postponing an Ethereum testnet activation set no mainnet date for the Glamsterdam upgrade.

The four-day conference is scheduled for Nov. 3-6 at Mumbai’s Jio World Centre. Its opening ceremony is set for 11 p.m. ET Nov. 2 to 1:30 a.m. ET Nov. 3 (4-6:30 a.m. UTC Nov. 3).

The issuance roundtable is scheduled for 3-3:55 a.m. ET Nov. 4 (8-8:55 a.m. UTC). It will bring together people arguing for and against changing Ethereum’s issuance policy.

The discussion will include EIP-8363, a draft titled “Tapered Issuance Burn.” It proposes burning part of validator rewards, with the portion increasing as the share of ETH staked grows. If adopted, the proposal would affect validator rewards and net ETH issuance. Its authors withdrew it from consideration for Hegotá on Oct. 1. EIP-8363’s authors wrote, “We commit to giving issuance its own process.”

The roundtable is a discussion; it does not confirm an Ethereum protocol change. The proposed design and its eventual effects remain unsettled.

Ethereum developers postponed a Hoodi testnet activation planned for Oct. 26 while examining how EIP-8037 could affect smart contracts already running on mainnet. The postponement notice set no replacement date for Hoodi and no mainnet date for Glamsterdam. TokenPost previously covered the Hoodi testnet postponement.
