The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) launched Project SAGE on Nov. 2 to explore how AI agents could be used in financial services and support the responsible development of agentic finance in Hong Kong.

Potential consumer uses include agent-assisted shopping and everyday payments. Business applications include procurement and treasury management, while machine-to-machine payments could cover digital services billed by usage.

The project will examine ways to verify agent identities, including Know Your Agent (KYA), and discuss interoperability standards. Its governance work will cover legal liability and consumer safeguards.

The HKMA also formed an expert group with representatives from financial institutions, technology service providers, professional services firms and academia.
