HSBC Plans Hong Kong AI and Emerging Technology Institute
The institute is expected to begin operating in early 2027, with blockchain, post-quantum cryptography and engineering optimization among its initial research areas.

HSBC plans to establish its AI & Emerging Technology Institute in Hong Kong, bringing AI research, blockchain work and post-quantum cryptography under one center to develop technologies for use across the bank.
The institute’s initial agenda covers AI applications, including training and safety, as well as fraud detection, blockchain technology, post-quantum cryptography and engineering optimization. Its mandate is to bring researchers and technology teams together to develop technologies for practical, scalable use across HSBC.
HSBC plans to locate the institute in Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis and has named Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as its anchor academic partner. Operations are expected to begin in early 2027.
The plan adds detail to HSBC’s earlier Hong Kong institute announcement, which identified blockchain and post-quantum cryptography among the initial priorities.
