OpenAI will retire ChatGPT Classic on Jan. 30, 2027, and users opening the older app will see a notice with a link to the newer version.

Chat history will carry over with users’ accounts, allowing them to continue existing conversations in the new app. The notice’s banner links to the download page.

OpenAI renamed the earlier desktop app after launching a new one in July that combines ChatGPT and Codex. The newer app includes Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex.

The company plans to test combining Chat and Work with a small group of users in the coming weeks.
