Austin Campbell Suggests 24-Hour Clock for Billion-Dollar Crypto Moves

The Zero Knowledge Group founder raised the idea after Binance put its Oct. 29 breach at about $6.34 billion in digital assets.

Austin Campbell, founder and managing partner of Zero Knowledge Group, suggested a 24-hour clock for billion-dollar crypto transfers after Binance’s $6.34 billion breach renewed scrutiny of financial risk controls.

In a conversation recorded Nov. 2, Campbell used a $1 billion transfer as his example. He said the clock could run under a protocol rule without a person deciding whether to approve each move. He argued that crypto systems have focused on technical security while giving too little attention to financial risk.

The proposal followed Binance’s Oct. 29 hot-wallet breach. Binance put the breach at about $6.34 billion in digital assets. The affected-assets figure is not a final net-loss figure.

In its Nov. 3 account of the incident, Binance said an attacker abused its internal wallet signing service. The exchange also identified compromised engineers’ machines in its account of the breach.

Binance said it had rebuilt the affected wallet system, tightened device controls and strengthened wallet-service risk controls. Its published changes do not include a transfer delay or cap, though the exchange said some security measures would remain confidential.
