OpenAI’s ChatGPT consumer product lead said Monday that ChatGPT search volume had reached about 20% of Google’s, describing a measure limited to prompts that trigger a web search.

The executive did not disclose the source of the Google search-volume data used for the comparison. Requests to define terms or provide simple instructions do not count under the measure.

A separate analysis of ChatGPT usage found that information-seeking made up 20.2% of sampled messages from individual ChatGPT accounts in September. That figure measures message topics, not use of ChatGPT Search or the number of web searches.

The product lead also described OpenAI’s “Intelligent UI” as visual, interactive interfaces within chatbot responses and called them a future direction for the technology.

On advertising, he said ads had not negatively affected ChatGPT or how people use it, and that most people seemed not to mind them. In October, OpenAI said it would begin showing images of sponsored goods and services in ChatGPT, expanding on its display of company names, logos and product links.
