OpenAI Uses GPT-6 Astra to Model Mazda Vehicle Nose Shapes

The design research also includes airflow simulations as Mazda engineers explore ways to reduce drag.

OpenAI is using GPT-6 Astra in Codex to help Mazda engineers model vehicle nose shapes and simulate airflow as they explore drag reduction during early design work.

OpenAI announced the research collaboration Tuesday, Nov. 3. Its research and Forward Deployed Engineering teams are working with Mazda’s aerodynamics and crash-safety engineers on vehicle designs that consider performance, styling and cost.

“By exploring and simulating dozens of variations, Astra in Codex helps us understand which features matter for aerodynamics,” said Akihiro Nakata, a principal engineer at Mazda.

The broader effort includes simulations of structural behavior, while Astra is being used for aerodynamic design. No vehicle model, measured drag reduction, road or wind-tunnel testing, or production commitment was announced. More progress and results are expected in the coming months.
