OpenAI announced Images 2.6 on Nov. 4, adding GIF creation to ChatGPT and extending its image tools to Codex and the developer API. The update brings animated images into the company’s image-generation lineup.

The announced global rollout covers ChatGPT and Codex subscription tiers on web, desktop and mobile. GIF generation is also available through the API, and the release includes additional safeguards for making GIFs.

Developers can choose GPT-Image-2.6 Flare, designed for speed, or GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst, aimed at higher-quality output with medium or high settings. Image generation is 50% faster than before. Flare can generate a low-quality image in as little as six seconds.

People create 4 billion images a week across ChatGPT, Codex and the API, without a separate count for GIFs. At the Sept. 8 Images 2.5 launch, weekly image creation across ChatGPT Images and GPT-Image models in the API exceeded 3 billion. The product scopes differ, so the figures do not provide a direct growth comparison.
