OpenAI Opens GPT-Live Calling API With $0.05 Voice-Layer Rate
Developers can route voice agents through SIP providers, which bill carrier charges separately from OpenAI’s per-minute rate.

OpenAI made its GPT-Live outbound calling feature generally available Wednesday, Nov. 4, letting developers connect voice agents to real phone numbers through Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunk providers.
The GPT-Live-1 front-end voice layer is priced at $0.05 per minute. SIP providers charge separately to carry calls onto the public phone network, adding carrier fees to the total call cost.
A SIP provider connects the call to the phone network, while GPT-Live carries the conversation. OpenAI handles audio processing and session logic, while SIP providers carry calls onto the public phone network. Supported providers include Twilio and Telnyx.
Calls support simultaneous two-way audio. Agents can also send and receive dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) keypad signals, which can help them interact with automated phone menus. SIP joins WebRTC and WebSocket as a way to connect GPT-Live to calls.
