Ethereum Core Developers Pause Glamsterdam Over Eight Gas Invariants

Ethereum Foundation developer Marius van der Wijden urged contract teams to check whether their projects rely on the affected invariants. Hoodi has no new activation date.

Ethereum core developers (ACD) paused the Glamsterdam hard-fork process and delayed its Hoodi testnet fork while teams assess risks tied to eight gas invariants that the upgrade may break.

ChainSecurity found that some projects rely on affected invariants. EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 change gas charges for certain operations and state, which could leave those projects vulnerable after the upgrade.

Marius van der Wijden, an Ethereum Foundation developer, urged contract developers and auditors to check whether their projects depend on any of the eight invariants. The Foundation has published a GitHub repository with explanations, examples and prompts for the review.

The Foundation has engaged several audit firms and is conducting internal reviews, but that work cannot cover every Ethereum project. Affected teams can email glamsterdam@ethereum.org.

The pause follows an earlier Hoodi test delay for Glamsterdam. Developers have set no new Hoodi activation date and will not run the fork until the contract risks are resolved.
