New York City Comptroller Mark Levine is urging Anthropic to address concerns about AI safety, governance and the pace of model development before pursuing a public listing.

In a Wednesday letter to CEO Dario Amodei, Levine requested details about the audits and controls Anthropic would use, the risks they would cover and when the company expects to put them in place. He also asked whether the safeguards would address Amodei’s earlier call to slow the development of AI capabilities.

Levine oversees public pension funds with more than $325 billion in assets. He argued that ethically binding safety agreements reached by the Trump administration and AI companies, including Anthropic, remain insufficient.

Anthropic plans to list as early as November. Its confidential IPO filing does not specify a listing date, share count or offering price. At a Wednesday meeting with some investors at its headquarters, the company disclosed third-quarter revenue of $16.8 billion.
