Eighty-four percent of S&P 500 companies that had reported third-quarter results beat estimates by the morning of Oct. 21, offering an early but limited read on the U.S. earnings season.

At 9 a.m. ET (13:00 UTC), roughly 9% of companies in the index had released results. The figure measures the share of reporting companies that topped estimates, not the share of the index by market weight.

An earlier update on early S&P 500 earnings results put the share of early reporters beating estimates at 83% while covering 24 major companies reporting that week.
