Qualcomm Executive Says SpaceX’s Planned Tower Count Could Rival Major Carriers’
The planned Starlink Mobile network would use Qualcomm hardware and software alongside SpaceX’s low-Earth-orbit satellite service.

Qualcomm Executive Vice President Durga Malladi said SpaceX’s planned tower count would rival the number operated by major U.S. wireless carriers and called his confidence in SpaceX’s commitment to the buildout “extremely high.”
The multi-year agreement covers Qualcomm hardware and software for SpaceX’s planned ground-based 5G network. It includes components from Qualcomm’s Dragonwing line and network software to support calls and data traffic across tens of thousands of U.S. cell sites.
The terrestrial network is planned to complement Starlink’s low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation. Qualcomm and SpaceX announced their collaboration Wednesday, Nov. 4.
The companies’ earlier announcement covered the equipment planned for Starlink Mobile’s U.S. 5G network.
