The XRP Ledger supports direct payments in XRP, which typically complete in eight seconds or less.

A total of 100 billion XRP existed at the asset’s creation. In 2017, Ripple placed 55 billion XRP, or 55% of the maximum supply, into escrow. Its original plan allowed releases of up to 1 billion XRP per month over 55 months, with unused tokens placed into new escrow.

Those supply arrangements describe how existing XRP was scheduled for release, while the ledger’s payment function shows how XRP can be used. They do not establish how much either affects its market price.

An earlier story on XRP’s value, demand, trust and liquidity examined a different view of the asset’s economics.
