The estimate marks the level at which the average U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF position would return to a loss, while recent fund flows remained positive.

An estimated $81,722 cost basis for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF holders marks the level at which the average ETF position would return to a loss, putting the threshold in focus before key U.S. economic releases on Sept. 30.

James Seyffart estimated the average cost basis on Sept. 21. He described the average ETF holder as moving back above break-even after Bitcoin rose above the estimate, marking the first time that had happened since January.

The figure applies to the average ETF position, not every investor or fund. Cost bases may vary substantially across funds and individual investors.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $31.0 million in net inflows on Sept. 28. BlackRock’s IBIT led the group with $54.8 million in inflows, followed by $10.3 million for Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust. Fidelity’s FBTC recorded $10.9 million in outflows, while Grayscale’s GBTC posted $23.2 million in outflows.

Flows were positive on every trading day from Sept. 17 through Sept. 28. The period included $999.0 million in net inflows on Sept. 21 and $714.7 million on Sept. 22.

The $84,000-$85,000 area is a separate long-term-holder supply cluster that measures on-chain Bitcoin supply rather than ETF cost basis. The market previously identified a long-term-holder supply band between $84,000 and $85,000, making the zone distinct from the $81,722 ETF estimate.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) has scheduled Personal Income and Outlays for August 2026 and the third estimate of second-quarter 2026 gross domestic product for 8:30 a.m. ET (12:30 p.m. UTC) on Sept. 30.

The next market signal will come from whether ETF flows remain positive and how Bitcoin trades around the estimated $81,722 level after the BEA releases. A sustained move below the threshold would place the average estimated ETF position back underwater, while a brief intraday move would provide less information.
