Record El Niño Could Free More Asian LNG Cargoes for Europe
The strongest El Niño on record may reduce winter gas demand in Asia as Europe enters the season with storage below recent averages.

A record-strength El Niño is likely to persist through the Northern Hemisphere winter, potentially easing Asian gas demand and making more spot liquefied natural gas cargoes available to Europe.
Sea-surface temperatures in the NINO.3 region reached 4.0°C above normal in September, exceeding the previous record of 3.6°C set in December 1997. The strongest conditions are virtually certain to continue through the Northern Hemisphere winter.
Strong-to-very-strong El Niño conditions are likely to persist through January-March 2027, with the probability above 83%. October readings reached +2.1°C in Niño-3.4, +3.0°C in Niño-3 and +3.9°C in Niño-1+2.
The event is approaching its peak, with weakening expected by early winter. Its effects, however, could continue through the season.
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, a recurring climate pattern centered on abnormal warming in the tropical Pacific. Its regional effects vary, so the current strength increases the probability of certain weather outcomes without guaranteeing warmer conditions in every Asian market.
For LNG markets, a milder winter could reduce gas consumption for heating and power generation across Asian importing markets. Lower demand could leave more flexible spot cargoes available for European buyers, but that remains a forecast rather than a confirmed change in trade flows.
Europe entered the week with gas storage at about 73% full, compared with more than 86% for the previous five years at the same point. Earlier coverage examined the risks facing European gas inventories, including scenarios in which storage could fall sharply by March 31, 2027.
The outlook therefore depends on two uncertain developments: whether El Niño produces a milder winter across key Asian markets and whether that weather reduces demand enough to release additional spot LNG for Europe. The next major reference point is the January-March 2027 forecast period.
