Polymarket Election Markets Show $657.8 Million in Lifetime Volume
The combined total covers each contract’s full trading history and does not isolate trading after Ethiopia’s vote or Romania’s canceled 2024 election.

Polymarket’s Ethiopia and Romania election contracts displayed $657,849,000 in combined lifetime volume, a figure that captures each market’s full trading history and does not isolate activity after either election event.
Polymarket displayed the totals in a page check at 10:22 p.m. ET on Oct. 16 (02:22 UTC on Oct. 17). The Ethiopia contract showed $286,011,008, and the older Romania contract showed $371,837,992. The platform counts the value of contracts bought and sold as volume, so repeated turnover can add to the total without showing how much distinct capital was at risk.
The Ethiopia contract tracked who would formally take office as prime minister after the June 1, 2026, election. The Prosperity Party won 438 seats, while the Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice won 13. The contract’s rules required an official appointment and oath, and trading bursts continued for 123 days after the vote.
Chris Park, a former Polymarket trader and head of MSR Decode, said “about $284 million” of Ethiopia-market volume came from pairs of accounts repeatedly trading with each other. MSR Decode’s analysis examined more than 38,000 post-election trade loops; more than 98% left neither side with a gain or loss, and the median holding time was nine seconds. The firm identified activity farming—turnover aimed at increasing an account’s recorded volume—as one possible explanation. The analysis did not establish who controlled the accounts or why they traded.
Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the 2024 presidential-election process on Dec. 6, 2024. Rajiv Sethi, a Barnard College economics professor, said an algorithm he developed with colleagues flagged 99.6% of the old contract’s volume as wash trading during certain weeks. He cautioned, “What appears to be wash trading isn’t always wash trading.” The classification does not establish traders’ identities or intent.
Polymarket’s rules prohibit wash trading. Shana Bautista, the company’s head of global intelligence and investigations, said Polymarket “immediately flagged this activity, investigated, and blocked the accounts from trading.” The company did not explain why the Ethiopian activity accumulated before it intervened.
The old Romania contract had a resolution deadline of Apr. 30, 2025, while a separate contract covered the subsequent presidential election.
