Bitcoin (BTC) Ordinals Pass 127.7 Million Inscriptions as Activity Cools

An Oct. 20, 2026 snapshot counted 34.1 gigabytes of inscription data and about 4,465 BTC in cumulative fees. By August 2025, activity tied to Runes, BRC-20 and Ordinals had returned to pre-halving levels.

Bitcoin (BTC) had passed 127.7 million Ordinals inscriptions in an Oct. 20, 2026 snapshot, even as transaction activity tied to Ordinals, Runes and BRC-20 had returned to pre-halving levels by August 2025.

The snapshot put inscription data at 34.1 gigabytes and cumulative inscription fees at about 4,465 BTC. Those fees reflect payments made to inscribe content over time; they differ from daily transaction fees and the prices paid to trade inscriptions.

Ordinals let people attach content to Bitcoin. The content is stored in Taproot script-path spend scripts, and the inscription count measures creations rather than transactions, trading volume or active ownership. A cumulative count therefore describes how many records have been made, not how much activity is taking place now.

Fee accumulation came in bursts. Ordinals inscriptions generated 1,779 BTC in fees in the first half of 2023. From Jan. 1 to Sept. 1 of that year, cumulative Ordinals trading volume was estimated at $596.4 million. The fee total captures block-space payments, while trading volume measures asset transactions.

Runes, a fungible-token protocol on Bitcoin, activated at block 840,000, mined April 19, 2024, at 8:09:27 p.m. ET (April 20 at 00:09:27 UTC) as the halving took effect. Runes-related activity generated 2,129 BTC in fees during its first week, with more than 3 million transactions recorded.

Runes made up an average 56.6% of Bitcoin transactions from April through November 2024. A May 2024 snapshot valued the 10 largest Bitcoin-based NFT collections, including Ordinals and Runes, at $1.03 billion, with average daily trading volume of $2.25 million. Those market measures track a collection basket and its trading, rather than inscription counts or total network fees.

By August 2025, daily transaction activity tied to Runes, BRC-20 and Ordinals had returned to pre-halving levels. The average Bitcoin transaction fee was $0.4004 on Oct. 9, 2026. That networkwide average is distinct from cumulative inscription fees and Runes’ first-week total. An earlier Q3 Bitcoin fee breakdown tracked aggregate transaction fees, another measure of block-space use.

The figures describe different kinds of activity: inscriptions count on-chain records, trading volume tracks asset transactions, and fees measure payments for block space. The Oct. 20 inscription tally shows the scale of records created and their accumulated data and fees, but does not establish steady trading demand or ongoing fee revenue.
