Seven Financial Institutions Forecast a 25-Basis-Point Fed Hike in December
The group includes Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and HSBC. The Fed's September increase was its first in more than three years.

Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, UBS and HSBC forecast that the Federal Reserve will raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points in December.
A 25-basis-point increase equals a quarter of a percentage point and would match the size of the Fed's September move. That increase was the Fed's first rate hike in more than three years.
In a separate survey of 100 economists, all 100 expected a December increase, while 94 expected the Fed to hold rates at its October meeting. The survey measured economists' expectations; the seven-institution outlook adds forecasts from financial institutions.
Separately, the U.S. consumer price index rose 3.7% in September from a year earlier, compared with 3.4% in August. Both figures are year-over-year readings, providing a separate measure of U.S. price trends.
Higher rate expectations can affect financial conditions and investor appetite for risk assets, including cryptocurrencies, making the institutions' December outlook relevant to U.S. crypto markets.
