The U.S. Treasury has appointed Judy Shelton as an adviser to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, giving a prominent advocate of the gold standard a role in the department’s monetary-policy discussions.

Shelton will advise Bessent on monetary policy, placing her views on currency and central-bank policy inside the Treasury Department. The appointment comes after her 2019 nomination by President Donald Trump to the Federal Reserve Board failed to secure Senate approval.

Her nomination faced opposition from every Democratic senator and several Republican senators. The dispute focused on her views regarding Federal Reserve independence, her support for a gold-standard system and her questions about whether the United States needs a central bank.

Before joining Treasury, Shelton was a senior fellow at an independent research institute and previously worked at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution.
