ECB Sets Christine Lagarde's Departure for Feb. 7, 2027
Her term was scheduled to end in October 2027. Lagarde has led the euro-area central bank since July 2019.

The European Central Bank (ECB) will see President Christine Lagarde leave before her term was scheduled to end, bringing forward a leadership change at the euro area's central bank.
The ECB announced Thursday, Oct. 29, that Lagarde will step down on Feb. 7, 2027. Her term was due to end in October 2027, and she has led the institution since July 2019.
The announcement came before the ECB's latest interest-rate decision, which was scheduled for later Thursday. The leadership news and the rate decision therefore fell on the same calendar day, putting the planned change in leadership alongside the bank's immediate policy timetable.
The ECB's Governing Council gave Lagarde a standing ovation. Her departure date sets a new point on the central bank's leadership calendar: Feb. 7, 2027, months before the scheduled end of her term.
For US markets and crypto traders, the timing brings the ECB's leadership and euro-area rate outlook into focus.
