Thailand Central Bank Deputy Governor Warns Payment Safety Lags Growth
Daranee Saeju cited $579 billion in estimated global fraud and scam losses for 2025 as PromptPay handled more than 80 million transactions a day.

Bank of Thailand Deputy Governor Daranee Saeju warned that fraud safeguards have not kept pace with digital payments, pointing to PromptPay’s scale and estimated global fraud and scam losses of $579 billion.
“Protection has not kept pace with innovation,” Saeju said at a World Economic Forum event during the International Monetary Fund (IMF)-World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok on Oct. 15. She warned of fraud risks tied to fast, interconnected digital payments.
More than 80 million transactions pass through PromptPay daily, with monthly value approaching 5 trillion baht. Its transaction value reached 54 trillion baht in 2025, more than twice Thailand’s gross domestic product. The system launched in 2016.
Saeju cited estimated global fraud and scam losses of $579 billion in 2025. The figure covers financial fraud and scams broadly, rather than only crypto fraud or on-chain losses.
The Bank of Thailand, IMF and World Bank Group launched the Bangkok Blueprint on Oct. 14. Its 12 considerations span five pillars addressing areas such as risk management, fraud prevention and response, cooperation, and consumer protection. TokenPost previously covered the Blueprint’s launch.
