Democrats’ Senate Control Could Constrain Trump’s Fed Appointments
Elizabeth Warren is expected to lead the Senate Banking Committee, putting Fed nominees under closer scrutiny as the central bank’s independence remains at issue.

Control of the Senate gives Democrats a new check on President Donald Trump’s effort to reshape the Federal Reserve, with governor confirmations likely to become a flashpoint for US monetary policy.
Democrats won Senate control Tuesday, a shift that could make it harder for Trump to install loyalists on the Fed’s seven-member Board of Governors.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts is expected to lead the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees the Fed. In that role, she is expected to resist nominees she considers too willing to yield to White House pressure.
Warren’s record combines calls for tougher Wall Street oversight with support for a Fed that sets rates free from political direction.
Mark Spindel, an investment manager at Potomac River Capital and co-author of a history of Fed independence, said a Democratic-led Senate would reinforce safeguards against presidential pressure. The Senate shift could shape future confirmation fights, while the Fed retains responsibility for setting interest rates.
