The U.S. Treasury announced sanctions Nov. 4 against people and companies it accused of supporting Iran’s shipping and aviation sectors. The announcement came one day after the midterm elections.
Treasury targeted an Indian man and his wife, alleging they operated a network that assisted Iranian shipping. The department said the network supplied false flags and certifications to sanctioned vessels transporting Iranian petroleum, including ships operating for Iran’s military and its proxies.
The designations also covered additional people and companies based in India, as well as one company in Turkey that Treasury accused of supporting Iran’s aviation industry.
In a Nov. 4 post on X, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration would sanction those “who continue supporting the Iranian regime, whether by land, sea, or air.” He also wrote, “Under Operation Economic Outcast, you are either with us or against us.”
The move follows Bessent’s earlier warning that the U.S. could seize up to $1 billion in Iran-linked cryptocurrency.
