XRPL Lending Plan Needs Validator Approval Before Mainnet Use
The design pairs pooled single-asset vaults with fixed-term, uncollateralized loans, while underwriting and risk decisions remain with institutions off-chain.

The XRP Ledger’s proposed lending framework would let institutions fund fixed-term, uncollateralized loans from pooled assets, but validators must approve the amendment before the protocol can operate on mainnet.
The design combines a Single Asset Vault, which pools deposits of one asset, with a Lending Protocol for originating loans. Institutions would handle credit underwriting and risk decisions off-chain. On XRPL, the protocol would standardize and enforce execution of agreed loan terms, along with servicing and repayment rules.
One example involves a payment provider that holds Ripple USD (RLUSD) reserves while waiting for a cross-border settlement. The provider could borrow short-term working capital while the settlement is pending.
The V1.1 design uses closed-ended vaults with subscription, investment and redemption phases. Its cash-basis accounting recognizes interest income when payments are made. The amendment is open for mainnet voting and requires support from more than 80% of trusted validators for two weeks to pass.
At Evernorth’s Nasdaq closing-bell event Wednesday, Oct. 14, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse spoke broadly about the XRP Ledger’s future uses. “We think the XRP Ledger will be used in ways that shines and is unique,” he said. The remarks did not announce a protocol launch; the lending design was published June 29.
Evernorth Holdings Inc. plans to begin institutional strategies in the fourth quarter of 2026, deploying from its 473 million XRP treasury. Ripple, Kraken, Coinbase and BitGo are its initial partners. The company plans to add on-ledger strategies after native lending and credit capabilities are activated and proven in production. Evernorth founder and CEO Asheesh Birla said, “As the XRP Ledger's own credit markets come online, we intend to be there with capital on day one.”
The proposal also connects with Ripple’s planned 2027 payments expansion on XRPL. The amendment remains open for validator voting.
