Filecoin Plan Shifts More Block Rewards to Services With Paying Customers

The roughly 75% estimate for lower daily new FIL entering circulation reflects the end of vesting schedules for Protocol Labs and Filecoin Foundation allocations, not a cut to block rewards.

Filecoin (FIL) plans to use its Solstice upgrade to reward services that attract paying storage customers more heavily, while the end of two vesting schedules is projected to slow daily new FIL entering circulation.

Solstice will direct a growing portion of block rewards to customer-facing services, with a smaller share going to consensus-only mining. Rewards set aside for customer-facing services that go unearned will be burned.

Vesting has ended for allocations to Protocol Labs and Filecoin Foundation. The end of those schedules is projected to reduce daily new FIL entering circulation by roughly 75%; that estimate concerns vesting-related supply, not a reduction in block rewards. A prior Filecoin tokenomics shift covered the vesting-related supply change, while Solstice changes how block rewards are distributed.

The measures affect separate parts of Filecoin’s economics: one changes scheduled token supply, while the other changes the distribution of block rewards. The Solstice upgrade is scheduled for Oct. 19 at 8:59:30 a.m. ET (12:59:30 UTC).
